Matt England originally started training with Chelmsford Karate Club at aroound 10 years older under the legendary Sensei Dot and Sensei Charles Naylor, where he progressed to 2nd Kyu.

Unfortunately, at the age of 14, after grading and receiving temporary 1st Kyu, he decided to leave the club and pursue other interests.

Fast forward 24 years later and with declining fitness, he decided to re-engage with Karate, training under the inspiring Sensei Jane and Sensei Richard Naylor-Jones.

It was at this stage Matt realised the tr

"|=ue value and benefits of Karate for both physical and mental wellbeing.

He was hooked immediately, improved his fitness and flexibility, trained at every opportunity and attained his full 1st Kyu grade within the year.

Already in the 'Veterans' category for competitions, Matt enjoyed a few medal placements in the Southern-Regions competitions and has entered some of the National competitions.

Next began the journey towards his 1st Dan grading. When the time came, despite all the will-power, he only managed a part-grade due to a certain lack of tactical awareness, technique and 'Kiai' in his freestyle kumite.

Six months later after a lot of work on his kumite, he passed his 1st Dan at Bath University Campus Sports Centre and won't mind admitting a flood of emotion upon hearing the result and possibly triggering many others into similar responses.

When the two years passed to be eligible for his 2nd Dan grading, Matt passed first-time under Sensei Frank Brennan, under restricted conditions due to the Covid Pandemic.

A basic instructors course and exam followed under the guidance of Sensei Richard and Sensei Jane and Matt has since enjoyed the opportunity to teach and motivate other students at Chelmsfor Karate Club and to help coach younger students at competitions.

A setback followed in 2022 where he ruptured his ACL during training. After successful surgery, he worked hard on rehab and was able to return to teach on crutches within a few months and after 9 months restart light training.

Today, with a recovered knee, he continues to teach and train at CKC. His son, Jatan, also trains and has achieved the grade of 2nd Kyu so far. He is now training towards his 3rd Dan.

Matt would like to thank Sensei Jane and Sensei Richard for their unwavering support and friendship over the years. Their continuous hard-work, elite-level instruction and pride in producing students who go on to represent and place at National competitions and for the England National team is always a source of inspiration. Karate has become a life-long pursuit of constant improvement and has taught him the benefits of performing under pressure and overcoming obstacles both in the Dojo and outside of it.
